What is the History of the Clan Colquhoun?
The Clan Colquhoun is a Highland Scottish clan that originated in Old Kilpatrick on the River Clyde. The clan’s lands are on the shores of Loch Lomond. The clan’s history dates back to the 14th century when Robert of Colquhoun married the daughter of the Laird of Luss. The clan’s name underwent changes in Ireland as the uneducated put it together phonetically and it became ‘Colhoun, Cohoon, Cahoon, and other variants. In the 16th century, a Colquhoun emigrated to Sweden and began a cannon-making factory. Names such as Cahun, Caun, Gahn, and Kharun can still be found in Sweden. The Colquhoun family came into being when Umfridus (Humphrey) de Kilpatrick was given the lands and barony of Colquhoun in Dunbartonshire by the Earl of Lennox.
