About Tactical Sporran

The tactical sporran is a modern take on a traditional accessory that was introduced with a focus on durability and functionality. Since a tactical sporran is made with durable materials like nylon and cowhide leather that enables it to withstand harsh conditions, and they are larger in size, going up to 8 inches in both width and height, while gives ample storage space for different items.

These sporrans are made for easy access to contents while ensuring they remain secure during any activity. At Kiltandkilts, we feature all types of sporrans, including tactical, traditional, and utility kilts.

What is the History of a Tactical Sporran?

The tactical sporran’s roots trace back to the evolution of the traditional sporran. Initially, highlanders used a sporran as a pocket alternative and then early sporrans were made from leather or skin and were simply designed. In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, metal claps were introduced in the sporran. The 18th-century military incorporated the use of goat-haired sporran molach, with flap-tops and large tassels. By the 19th century, sporrans became more ornate, using many animal skins and hair, even including full-face animal “masks.” The 20th century brought about a design revolution in the sporran with Celtic revivalism, which played an important role.

What Distinguishes a Tactical Sporran from a Traditional Sporran?

Tactical sporrans stand out from their traditional counterparts in several ways. Primarily, the materials used and the design aspects set them apart.

Furthermore, tactical sporrans are designed for use in active settings, often as an accessory for outdoor adventures or sports. Traditional sporrans are functional as a pocket or wallet, and they are usually seen as an integral part of the kilt outfit for men.

What are some Common Materials Used To Make Traditional Sporran?

Traditional sporrans were made with a range of materials and constructions. Leather is a prevalent choice for the sporran, entire body, flap front, and embossed or hand-tooled with different designs such as Celtic, thistle, or other patterns. Fur is also used prominently in the traditional sporrans, such as dress sporans and other types of fur, including rabbit and seal.

Metal components, usually made from brass or silver, add a decorative touch, particularly in sporrans dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Other metals, like pewter, are used for the cantles at the top of dress sporrans, often adorned with symbolic Celtic imagery. In some cases, cloth pouches known as trews also come into play in the creation of traditional sporrans.
