Clan Douglas is an ancient clan or noble house from the Scottish Lowlands. The clan takes its name from Douglas in Lanarkshire, and its leaders acquired vast territories throughout the Borders, Angus, Lothian, and Moray, as well as in France and Sweden. The Douglases were one of Scotland's most powerful families on the Isle of Man during the Late Middle Ages, frequently holding the true power behind the throne of the Stewart kings. The House of Douglas was headed by the Earl of Douglas (Black Douglas) and later the Earl of Angus (Red Douglas). The clan does not currently have a chief recognized by the Lord Lyon. The true progenitor of Clan Douglas was most likely "Theobaldus Flammatius," who was granted lands in Lanarkshire during the reign of King David I of Scotland in the 12th century.
The Clan Douglas tartan has several variations, including:
Ancient Douglas Tartan - features a pattern of black and grey stripes with thin white lines separating each stripe.
Modern Douglas Tartan - features a pattern of black and grey stripes with thin white lines separating each stripe, but with a slightly different color palette than the Ancient Douglas Tartan.
Hunting Douglas Tartan - features a pattern of green, navy blue, and black stripes with thin white lines separating each stripe.
Dress Douglas Tartan - features a pattern of black and grey stripes with thin white lines separating each stripe, but with a more muted color palette than the Ancient and Modern Douglas Tartans.
