About Clan Cunningham Tartan

The Cunningham tartan is a specific pattern of plaid associated with Clan Cunningham, a Scottish family group. The clan's motto, "Over Fork Over", signifies their historical symbol. An important part of their clan crest is the image of a unicorn's head. The clan's name, "Cunningham", originates from a place called Cunningham in Ayrshire, Scotland. In the traditional Scottish language, Gaelic, the clan is known as "MacCuinneagain". There's an interesting connection between the Cunningham tartan and the MacGregor tartan. This dates back to when Clan MacGregor was legally forbidden from using their own name and members had to adopt other names - Cunningham being one of them.  You can find these different patterns listed in specific databases known as tartan registries and weaving registries.

What is the History of the Cunningham Clan?

The Cunningham clan is a lowland Scottish clan with origins dating back to the 12th century. The clan's traditional origins are placed in the northern part of Ayrshire, where the first Cunningham is believed to have been a Flemish man named Wernibald, who adopted the placename as his own when he was granted Kilmaurs. The chiefs of the Clan Cunningham supported Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence, and in the 15th and 16th centuries, the clan feuded with the Clan Montgomery. Historically, the chief of Clan Cunningham held the title of Earl of Glencairn, but in modern times, the chief of the clan is Cunningham of Corsehill. The clan does not currently have a chief, therefore it is considered an Armigerous clan by the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. Two of the most prominent branches of the Cunningham Clan, the Cunninghams of Corsehill and the Cunninghams of Caprington, trace their ancestry back to the medieval era.
